Our original co-founders, met when both their mothers were admitted to the same rehab facility to recover from debilitating illnesses. They bonded over the fact that they were both from professional backgrounds, but spent most of their days and nights in the rehab facility to help ensure their moms were getting the best care possible. Their careers and families suffered, however with no other viable options in terms of care oversight and the fear of succumbing to an overburdened health care system, they felt there was not much choice. After recognizing that they were not alone in their need for help, they came up with a solution: Qualified health care professionals, primarily nurses, who give electronic updates and advocate for our loved ones while we stay at work and try to maintain normalcy for our employers and families. Illness is a part of life and we need to make it more manageable for all those affected, including families and employers.
When confronting the U.S. fractured health care system and under-staffing at many hospitals, rehab centers, long term care and other health care facilities where their loved ones were receiving care, our co-founders knew that managing their family members health care needs was essential to ensure they received appropriate and timely medical interventions, proper coordination of care and avoidable catastrophic care or outcomes. It became critical to manage and coordinate the receipt of safe, quality care, which also required ensuring timely and accurate flow and exchange of information among several physician disciplines and other licensed health care professionals. This is where technologically-enabled resources became essential to our co-founders successful management of their family members' health needs.
As our co-founders managed to get a handle on their own loved ones' care, they found that many of their friends and colleagues were facing similar struggles. The difference, however, was that many of their friends and colleagues were unable to successfully navigate through the complex web of health care bureaucracy and multiple disciplines for their family care members, which left them exasperated. In addition, some were unable to pick up at a moment's notice to fly home and attend vital doctor's appointments and outpatient procedures with their elderly parents or drop everything at the office to pick up their sick child from the daycare center two and three times a week and then rush them back and forth from the doctor. The sharing of these stories, caused them to think about how beneficial it would be if their friends and colleagues could have access to a local health care advocate and care management coordinator who could step into their shoes. Someone who could attend doctor appointments and outpatient procedures with their elderly parents or sick children, coordinate follow-up care and visits, and submit reports back so that they continue to remain at their jobs. Our co-founders engaged like-minded health care professionals willing to embark on the journey of serving as health care advocates and care management coordinators for families in need of such advocacy and assistance in navigating the care of family members.
